Course Description
What is the Level 2 Health and Safety in the Workplace course?
The Qualsafe Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace (RQF) is designed to give learners a practical understanding of health and safety at work.
Health and safety is not simply about policies, signs and paperwork.
It is about recognising what can cause harm, understanding who is responsible for managing risk and knowing what action should be taken when something is unsafe.
During the course, learners develop an understanding of:
workplace health and safety responsibilities
hazards and risks
how risk assessments work
ways workplace risks can be controlled
common causes of accidents and ill health
what should happen following an accident or incident
The course is suitable for people working across a wide range of sectors and provides a strong foundation in workplace health and safety.
What the course feels like
We want learners to understand how health and safety applies to the workplace around them — not simply remember terminology for an assessment.
Throughout the course, learners will explore situations and hazards they could realistically encounter at work.
This includes looking at:
why accidents happen
how seemingly minor hazards can cause serious harm
how risk assessments are used
why control measures sometimes fail
the responsibilities of employers and employees
what people should actually do when they identify a problem
Where appropriate, examples and discussions can be related to your own working environment.
The aim is for learners to leave able to look at their workplace differently and recognise where they can contribute to making it safer.
How the Course builds
The course progresses through four main areas of workplace health and safety.
1 – Roles, responsibilities and workplace safety
Understand employer and employee duties, key health and safety requirements, workplace welfare and the importance of training and competence.
2 – Risk Assessment
Learn the difference between hazards and risks, how risk assessments are carried out and how they help create safer systems of work.
3 – Accidents, Incidents & Emergencies
Understand what to do when things go wrong, including accident reporting, near misses, emergency arrangements, fire procedures and first aid provision.
3 – Workplace Hazards & Controls
Explore common workplace hazards and the measures used to reduce risk, including manual handling, electricity, fire, hazardous substances and working at height.

How our training is different
Health and safety training is most useful when people can connect it with what actually happens at work.
We therefore focus on helping learners understand the reasoning behind the rules.
Rather than simply working through legislation and definitions, our instructors use workplace examples, discussion and practical problem-solving to explore:
where hazards come from
why people sometimes underestimate risk
how control measures reduce harm
how individual behaviour affects workplace safety
what happens when systems fail
how employees can contribute to safer working practices
For private courses, training can also be contextualised around your organisation, working environment and the types of hazards your employees are likely to encounter.
The qualification requirements remain the same, but the examples used during learning can make the subject far more relevant to your team.
